A Saxophone Celebration honoring saxophone pioneer ELISE HALL (b. 1853 d. 1924)
Bamboo and Brass LTD presents a concert celebrating the wide range of saxophone music in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of saxophonist Elise Hall’s death.
Who is Elise Hall?  Elise Hall (1853-1924) defied the social norms of her day by mastering the saxophone and performing concerts in the U.S. and France with professional musicians of the highest caliber.  She was America’s first female concert saxophonist.  She was the first woman to play with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, for their performance of L’Arlessiene in 1910.  She was one of the most important proponents of concert saxophone in the mid-1800s to early 1900s and commissioned orchestral and chamber works that featured or included the saxophone.  She made a significant contribution to the evolution of the saxophone; yet, she has been undervalued and underappreciated historically.
With the goal of helping to correct this historical oversight, an International Women’s Festival and Tribute to Elise Hall Celebrating Women Saxophonists and Composers around the World will be held from October 15, 2024 to December 15, 2024, with concerts and lectures worldwide.  Saxophonists Ann Babb-Nordling, Barbara Hubers-Drake, Evan Takle, Ken Murphy, Adam Chmaj and clarinetist Lauren Hall-Stigerts will be part of this noteworthy festival and present a genre-bending evening of saxophone music from classical to blues to jazz.  Rhythm section Seth Ahnert (piano), Rob Parks (drums) and Phil Demaree (bass) will skillfully provide the underlying rhythm, harmony and pulse.  Also making a guest appearance will be playwright, author, and actor Betsy Hanson appearing as Elise Hall.
