Hot Club Swing musicians from around Puget Sound are coming together to celebrate Django Reinhardt’s 113th birthday! The concert will feature two bands, The Hot Tub of France and Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’, plus other musicians will make guest appearances.

Django was an itinerant Romani guitarist who earned international acclaim in the 1930’s. Many of his compositions became jazz classics and he is considered one of the top guitar soloists of all time. Duke Ellington called Django “the most creative jazz musician to originate anywhere outside the United States.”  Decades later, Jerry Garcia said, “Nobody has really come to the state that he was playing at…nobody plays with the whole fullness of expression that Django had.”

The Hot Tub of France dares to ask: “What would Django Reinhardt play if he were alive today?” With one part Parissienne swing straight out of the 1940s, and another part 1950s bebop (but on accordion!), you’ll somehow relax and perk right up at the same time–it’s a hot tub for your ears. Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’ evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite. Says violinist Ranger Sciacca: “Our goal is to feature as many great musicians and different instruments as we can!”

A concert in remembrance of the life of music and music of Cathy Croce, featuring music from her album Putting Words in my Mouth.

Featuring Nova Devonie, Sarah Rudinoff, Kim Scanlon, and Patrice O’Neill with Abbey Blackwell, Andy Roth, Kate Molloy, and Wayne Horvitz.

Hosted by Riz Rollins.

“In the early months of 2022 Seattle lost a treasured member of the music community

–  singer and songwriter Cathy Croce.

Cathy had stopped performing publicly in the late 1990’s, as she focused on her family, and her family’s business. Cathy was the daughter of “Big John” Croce, a first generation Italian immigrant, who started Pacific Food Importers in 1971. But in the 1980’s and 90’s Cathy Croce was a regular fixture around the Seattle songwriter scene, and a member of the Mel Cooley’s – which included Andrew Ratshin of Uncle Bonsai fame, Kim Scanlon, and Patrice O’Neill (singer, and artistic director of Wintergrass). In 1996 Cathy started a solo project with a variety of local luminaries in the Seattle folk/songwriter world including Dave Keenan, Nova Devonie, Garey Shelton, and Heart drummer Ben Smith.

In due course she approached Wayne Horvitz to come on board as a producer, and the record was completed with a host of musicians including guitarist Timothy Young, cellist Brent Arnold, singer Julie Wolf (Ani de Franco, Bruce Cockburn), and horn players Hans Teuber, Jim Knapp, and Steve Moore. The collection of songs was entitled “Putting Words in my Mouth” and showcases here quirky forms and harmonies, beautiful melodies, and surrealistic lyrics reflecting on love, family, her Italian and Slavic heritage, and ultimately the absurdity of existence, all with a smile.

Shortly after her death, composer Wayne Horvitz reflected on her legacy. “The closest comparison I could make as a songwriter is Elvis Costello. But honestly I like Cathy’s songs more. And vocally she is astounding. Cathy Croce is, artistically, the one that got away. Her songs are lovely, moving, and hilarious all at once”.”

Born to Ethiopian immigrants in the Pacific Northwest, Beserat Tafesse grew up with a wide array of musical and cultural influences. Traditional Ethio Jazz, the great Stevie Wonder, and his parents favorites were all mixed up and strewn together; each uniquely informing and penetrating his mind with a diverse soundscape from an early age.

As he grew older, Beserat went to Central Washington University to pursue a degree in Classical Euphonium Performance, unintentionally cementing his love for jazz trombone instead. From there he attended the Manhattan School of Music, studying Jazz Trombone with some of the greats, and shedding nightly with many of New York’s living legends.

You may have seen him playing with acts such as the Mambo Legends Jazz Orchestra, The Birdland Big Band, or blasting away with Slavic Soul Party. You may also have heard his work on the Grammy Nominated album Art of the Arrangement, by Doug Beavers, one of many projects he gladly lent his horn playing to.

After playing for years around town with bands such as The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and traveling the globe with groups such as Kings Kaleidoscope, Beserat decided it was finally time to return home to Seattle, to spend time with his friends and family who helped raise him.

Although he currently spends most of his time in Seattle, he still very much is a part of the national scene, traveling to and from his home as he sees fit.

While in Seattle, Beserat continues to collaborate with world class musicians and teach at Cornish College of the Arts as well as work on his own debut solo project.
