Amplifying the stories, songs and voices of womxn and non-binary artists through blues and blues-influenced music. This show is part of an exciting series, curated by Reese T.

Julia Francis is a singer-songwriter and sound healing practitioner. With her full-tilt blues-rock band, and in her transformational sound baths, Julia’s voice offers catharsis and shines powerful light on the unseen sonic world that surrounds and connects us all.

Julia’s music is deeply rooted in the blues legacies of women like Gertrude “Ma” Rainey, Billie Holiday and Bonnie Raitt, and her vocal frequencies echo those of her Celtic ancestors.

“The sheer force of her voice is quite remarkable, but Francis’ true power comes from her ability to engage and uplift.” – South Seattle Emerald

Eye am music A.k.a Eye am was born Tamikia Jones on the east coast. She began her life in music at the age of eight playing the drums at church and singing in the choir. Eye am first really fell in love with music when she was around 11 years old. Her favorite singer is Billie Holiday, an artist who she greatly admires. Over the last eight years Eye am has been working on bringing music back to its root of healing. As a true practitioner of natural healing she has always believed that music has the power to heal. Her style of music is based on many genres through which she uses her voice to create words that heal, uplift or simply bring joy.

Bringing an unforgettable ambiance to any stage, Maya Marie will captivate an audience as her soulful voice kicks a beat into your heart. Backed by the grit of rock and blues, she inspires the audience to let go and liberate themselves while digging up her truths from the depths of her soul.

Shaina Shepherd is a singer, songwriter, vocal teacher, and community organizer in Seattle, WA. Known for her pervasive style as front-woman to soul-grunge band BEARAXE, her notable vocal stylings have brought her into various creative spaces — from collaborating with Duff McKagan, Chong The Nomad and Acid Tongue to sharing stages with rock stars like Dave Matthews and Thunderpussy to being a soloist with the classical ensembles around the country. Inspired by the parallels between gospel and garbage metal, Shaina Shepherd is not your average vocalist. Living in the city where both Soundgarden and Quincy Jones cut their teeth, Shaina lends her soulful voice to projects of all genres.

Inspired by Nina Simone’s commitment to representing the times with the ivories at her fingers, Shaina Shepherd tells heartfelt stories of love, loss, and personal power. She describes herself as an anthem artist translating pivotal moments in human history through her unique form of poetry. Her biggest inspirations are often from Mark Twain, James Weldoyn Johnson, Maya Angelou. A teacher at heart, Shaina’s songs often include a moment of audience interaction or shared moments of reflection in the room. Her dynamic vocal combines the power of theater with the tender introspection of American folk music in a commitment to every song, story, and note being real, raw, and present.

Conceived as ‘a dusty cassette by a truck stop cash register’, Once Beautiful Twice Removed, the new collection from Brooklyn’s Elysian Fields, is an album to drive to, tracing invisible routes along with geographical ones, opening with a sermon in a small country chapel (abruptly interrupted by the ballsy “Road Trip”), and finishing with the detached, deftly detailed “Pack These Boxes.” In between are many American places, and the stories that live there, “Gone South,” “Crows Over Cornfields,” “Alone In The Desert.”

The storytelling unfolds as the country slides past in the car window. “Another corner cafe, where life and death had it out…” Singer Jennifer  Charles begins, in the dreamy “Elegance To Forgetting.” These ballads of sad cafes are the heart of Once Beautiful, Twice Removed, stories that spring from the same ground that nourished McCullers, Inge, McMurtry, and Kerouac.

Songwriter Mike Dumovich opens the evening. Mike is a songwriter who live with his wife Lindsey Dumovich and two stepsons Rocky and Ollie in Olalla Wa.  He is just wrapping up his 5th record “Real Shoring” in collaboration with Hunter Lea, Light in the Attics standout producer. The record includes performances by Lori Goldston, Bill Patton, Chris Ballew, Eyvind Kang, Anne Marie Ruljancich, Anna-Lynne Williams, Luke Bergan, and was mastered by Martin Feveyear.  The show at the Royal Room will be his first in several years.

Michael Alpert, Stuart Brotman, Sasha Lurje and Craig Judelman present: Songs of the Jewish Ukrainian Heartland

As war rages on in one of the cradles of Yiddish culture, we join together to sing the songs and tell the stories of our shared homeland – tales of forbidden loves, boy soldiers, the wonders of nature and looming danger. Ukraine is a heartland of Yiddish music and the source of our most important collections of old-time klezmer tunes and folk songs. In this program four of the world’s most in-demand klezmer musicians bring this diverse repertoire to life, painting a picture of Jewish life in Ukraine then and now, raising money and awareness and standing in solidarity with our friends fighting for their freedom.

The closing concert of Seattle Yiddish Fest – a 3 day celebration of Yiddish culture featuring workshops jam sessions, lectures, dances and more – as well as the last stop of a 5 week tour by Alpert, Lurje and Judelman. It is also the Seattle area album-release show for a new record by Alpert and Judelman, titled ‘In Der Heym’, available now on Borscht Beat records.

Michael Alpert is one of the best-known contemporary Yiddish culture-bearers and a leader of the international revitalization of Yiddish music and dance since the 1970’s. A US National Heritage Fellow known for his work with Brave Old World, Kapelye, Itzhak Perlman and many others, he is joined by two of the driving forces in the vibrant Berlin klezmer scene and far beyond – celebrated Latvian singer Sasha Lurje and American violinist, composer and arranger Craig Judelman. For this concert they are thrilled to feature special guest Bassist Stuart Brotman, himself one of the longest standing members of the ‘klezmer revival’, known for his work with Veretski Pass and Brave Old World, in addition to Canned Heat, Kaleidoscope and many many more.

The Band:

Michael Alpert – Guitar, Fiddle, Voice

Craig Judelman – Fiddle, Voice

Sasha Lurje – Voice

Stuart Brotman – Bass
