Don’t miss this rare solo DJ set with Kassa Overall who mixes vocals, power-drumming, and laptop fireworks with avant-garde experimentation, showing why Kassa’s deep Seattle jazz roots make him a go-to player in the hiphop world. Overall is a Grammy-nominated musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer who has collaborated with Theo Croker, Vijay Iyer, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tomoki Sanders, and Ishmael Butler among others. Overall previously released four critically acclaimed projects: I THINK I’M GOOD, Go Get Ice Cream and Listen to Jazz, Shades of Flu, and Shades of Flu 2. His latest release ANIMALS (Warp Records, May 2023), pushes his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision further. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
“Kassa is a pre-eminent style bender and blender, successfully juxtaposing genres through his production expertise and use of melodic and harmonic forms that deftly integrate the new with the old.”
— Grammy-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington for The New York Times
Catch Kassa Overall twice at the Earshot Jazz Festival. On Thursday October 26, Overall and his ensemble will perform at Langston.
