The Ray Skjelbred Trio plays classic hot jazz, swing and blues inspired by music from Chicago in the 1920’s and 30’s. Each musician has many year’s experience and a strong historic sense of the music they set out to perform, as well as a sense of daring to explore new ideas in traditional forms.

Ray Skjelbred’s film “Piano Jazz: Chicago Style! was the documentary/history winner in the 2018 New York Jazz Film Festival. He has learned his craft by direct contact and playing with original artists like Earl Hines, Darnell Howard, Victoria Spivey and Art Hodes.

Jacob Zimmerman (clarinet and sax) is one of the most highly respected and sought after jazz musicians in the country. He is equally at home in informal small groups and big swing bands. He is highly regarded for his arranging skills and Earshot named him “Emerging Artist” in 2013.

Matt Weiner (bass) is one of the busiest players in the Northwest. Matt has varied skills and interests and has worked in many jazz settings, folk music and was a featured performer in the 2019 Christmas Revels in Cambridge, MA. Matt is also a highly regarded bass teacher.

Ray, Jacob and Matt appear together on the CD “More of That” and collectively they have appeared on more than 100 recordings.
