BIG LAZY, New York City’s gritty instrumental trio has flourished for over 25 years playing its singular brand of Guitar Noir and Crime Jazz from UCLA’s Royce Hall to the Opéra National de Lyon. Simultaneously noir and pastoral the trio conjures images from big sky country to seedy back rooms with cinematic clarity. Their most recent album, Dear Trouble (featuring NYC luminaries Marc Ribot and Steven Bernstein), captures the essence of their legendary live shows.

Big Lazy founder and guitarist Stephen Ulrich is the composer for the HBO series Bored to Death. In 2023 Barbès Records released his solo album Music from This American Life, a collection of recent music he composed for the iconic radio program.

Yuval Lion (drums) has toured and recorded with some of the world’s most distinguished rock, rhythm and blues and jazz artists including Chrissie Hynde, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Meshell Ndgeocello and John Zorn.

Andrew Hall is a sought-after bassist in NYC’s traditional Jazz scene and has performed internationally with a wide array of artists from Sparklehorse to Martha Wainwright.

“Big Lazy, the elegantly gritty instrumental trio led by the extraordinary guitarist Stephen Ulrich, plays stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers’ romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Herrmann.”  The New Yorker

“The Big Apple Crème de la Crème.”  Robert Christgau – dean of American rock critics
