Drummer Ted Poor brings his innovative, boundary stretching jazz to the stage in quartet format. Get ready for the exciting debut of a new quartet featuring two of Los Angeles’ most innovative musicians, bassist Anna Butterss and alto saxophonist Josh Johnson along with Poor’s longtime UW colleague and musical collaborator, trumpeter Cuong Vu.

Ted Poor grew up in the Finger Lakes region of New York, graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 2003, then established himself in New York before coming west. Poor has collaborated with Andrew Bird, Ben Monder, Blake Mills, Bill Frisell, Myra Melford, Kris Davis, and Andrew D’Angelo among others. His most recent recording You Already Know(Impulse/New Deal Records) presents his propulsive, imaginative music that showcases “the drum kit as an intricate engine of melody, timbre, and even harmonic movement” (Paul de Barros). Cuong Vu has been widely recognized by jazz critics as a truly unique voice. After studying at the New England Conservatory on a full scholarship, Vu established himself in New York touring internationally and releasing more than ten recordings. Vu is currently the chair of Jazz Studies at The University of Washington. Vu has collaborated with Pat Metheny (and received two Grammys as a member of the Pat Metheny Group), Laurie Anderson, and David Bowie among others. Anna Butterss is a bassist and composer hailing from Adelaide, Australia. She has performed, recorded and toured with a wide array of artists including Phoebe Bridgers, Jenny Lewis, Madison Cunningham, Jeff Parker, Larry Goldings, Makaya McCraven, Chris Speed and Walter Smith III, among others. Josh Johnson is a saxophonist, keyboardist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. His solo debut “Freedom Exercise” (Northern Spy) was featured in Rolling Stone’s Best Music of 2020 and Bandcamp’s Best Jazz Albums of 2020. He has collaborated with Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, Nate Mercereau, Marquis Hill, Kiefer and the Chicago Underground Quartet.

Expect adventurous, intense, and soulful music.
