Every Monday, with occasional exceptions for holidays or special events, The South Hudson Music Project presents New Music Mondays from 7.30- 9 p.m. at The Royal Room. Typically they are followed by the Monday Night Jazz Jam at 9.

New Music Mondays focuses on improvised music, experimental music, and the outer boundaries of jazz. Many New Music Mondays feature the Royal Room Collective Music Ensemble. Other nights are often led by members of the ensemble, sharing the same pursuit of combining composition, improvisation, conduction and other avenues to foster the new and unexpected.

Tonight, the UW Modern Music Ensemble  presents a program of their “Greatest Hits”- works by Katie Balch, Evis Sammoutis, Sarah Hennies, Earle Brown, and Galina Utsvolskaya.

Performing repertoire spanning from the 20th century to works by living composers, the Modern Music Ensemble is the University of Washington’s premiere new music ensemble. Under the directorship of Cristina Valdés since 2016, the ensemble has given numerous world premieres and performed the works of both established and younger composers. The ensemble’s diverse and innovative programming has included music by a wide range of composers including Patricia Alessandrini, Katie Balch, Olga Neuwirth, Chaya Czernowin, Steve Reich, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, Beat Furer, Kaija Saariaho, George Lewis, Wang Lu, José-Luis Hurtado, Pierre Boulez, Oliver Schneller, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez and Ania Vu, amongst many others. The ensemble works regularly with faculty and student composers, in addition to visiting composers, conductors, and coaches/performers. Recent guests have included Stephen Drury, Garth Knox, Ursula Oppens, and Ludovic Morlot.

This project has been supported, in part, by a grant from 4Culture. Special thanks to our additional sponsors Raynier Foundation and Tulalip Cares.
